September 17th, 2021 Proposed New Vernon Marsh Trail Hike

Join us for an exciting opportunity to preview the new planned trail on the west side of the Vernon Marsh.  Our hike will be led by Nathan Holoubek, wildlife biologist and marsh manager. This hike will be longer and more difficult than previous Friends sponsored hikes so plan accordingly.  Hope to see you there!

What:  Proposed New Vernon Marsh Trail Hike (approx 5 miles)

We will be hiking on the proposed route of the new trail being planned for the west side of the Marsh.  The trail is a circle route and will start and end in the Hwy NN parking area.  This route consists of uneven ground, standing water, muddy areas, and small creeks to jump or wade through.  This hike is rated as more difficult.  In the future this route will consist of boardwalks which will make hiking easier.

When:  Friday September 17th at 10:00 am until completed

Where:  Meet at the Hwy NN trailhead and parking area in Mukwonago (enter near railroad tracks off Hwy NN)

How:  Your RSVP if attending is required.  Please email or call in your rsvp to astasiewsk@gmail.com or call Allen at 414-507-8358.

Additional Details:  Wear insect repellent and sunscreen.  Bring water to drink.  Wear appropriate hiking shoes.  We will be walking through very wet and muddy areas. You will get dirty. This hike is longer than previous Friend's hikes at a little under 5 miles.  Please plan accordingly and call 414-507-8358 if you have any questions.

Paddle Day Route and Map

Bring your own silent sport watercraft (canoe, kayak, SUP, other) or rent one.  All are welcome.  Unfortunately, we won't be providing any free canoes or kayaks this year.  If you don't have a watercraft we've included information from our favorite partner, Prs Watersports, below  If you rent from Jon, he will deliver and pick up your rental, and provide life vests and paddles.  It can't get much easier than that, and the price is very reasonable for a full day on the water.

Put-in Location:  We will be launching from a new location this year, Fox River County Park on Hwy H and Lawnsdale Rd. in Waukesha. Here's the address: W264 S4500 River Road, Waukesha, WI 53189  There's plenty of parking.  You will need a Waukesha County Park Pass to enter the park.  You can purchase a pass at the kiosk at the park entrance. A daily pass is $6 per car (cash or check)

Take-Out Location:  We'll be paddling the Fox River Park to the Vernon Marsh and then through the marsh to the Mukwonago River. At the Mukwonago River we will make a right turn and paddle a short distance upstream to the take-out on Holz Parkway in Mukwonago.

What to Bring:  Bring water, sun screen, camera, dry bag.  Dress for the weather, wear a hat, and water shoes.  Bring and wear a mask if using our arranged shuttle. This event will take place in light rain.  We will cancel the event if heavy rain, storms, or lightning are forecast.

Shuttling: Of course, when paddling rivers there's always the question of "How do I get back to my car?"  There is limited parking available at the take-out spot, so if you'd like, feel free to arrange your own shuttle.  However, we are working on providing free shuttle transportation from the take-out spot on Holz Parkway back to Fox River Park at regular intervals.  We're finalizing details right now so we'll let all participants know as more information is available.

Questions:  Call Allen Stasiewski at 414-507-8358 or email at astasiewsk@gmail.com.  This event is free but an RSVP is necessary.  Send RSVP, by responding to this email or call the number above.  We will need the names of all members in your party, a key contact email and/or phone number, and the expected number and type of watercraft you will be using or renting.

To rent watercraft, call Jon at 262-424-9805 or email PrsWatersports@gmail.com (mention Vernon Marsh Rentals).  Jon can help you decide what to rent based on your experience.
